Types of Wine
Garnacha Tintorera, with around 5000 hectares, accounts for almost 60% of the surface area of the production area of our Almansa Denomination of Origin.
However, we could not understand our Denominación de Origen Almansa without the presence of our Monastrell, which is the second most common grape variety in our production area.
Monastrell makes up 13% of the surface area and some 1100 hectares and has also been and is the protagonist in many of the most renowned wines of DO Almansa.
As our production area is at a higher altitude than other Mediterranean areas (where Monastrell is also present), the wines made with this grape are more expressive, fresh and elegant.
Monastrell in Almansa acquires Mediterranean profiles with continental tones from the continental climate.
It is a variety that is Mediterranean, long cycle, present throughout the Mediterranean basin, but it is in Almansa where it acquires more refined nuances than in areas such as Jumilla or Alicante.
As for the rest of the red grapes, in the production area of Denominación de Origen Almansa we also find varieties such as Cabernet-Sauvingon, Syrah, Merlot and Petit Verdot.
As far as white grapes are concerned, in Denominación de Origen Almansa we also have varieties such as Verdejo, Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay.
