Production Area
The geographical area covered by the DO Almansa is a high plateau that borders to the east, through the so-called Almansa corridor, with the former Kingdom of Valencia.
The main differentiation of the territory that includes our Almansa Denomination of Origin, compared to Levante is the difference in altitude, going from 400 meters above sea level in the town of Fuente La Higuera, to 700 meters in Almansa, and can reach up to 1100 meters above sea level in areas such as Higueruela.
The wine production area of the DO Almansa includes the plots and sub-plots located in eight municipalities, with more than 9,000 hectares of vineyards.
Our production area has unique characteristics, grouping municipalities of 8 localities that favor the development of our vineyards and what will be the future wines of Denomination of Origin Almansa.
The quality of the grapes can vary greatly from one area to another, so it is essential to adapt the environmental justification of the municipalities that make up our Denomination of Origin on homogeneous environmental criteria: climate, soil or height above sea level.
Surface area of 1445 km2 spread over 8 municipalities.
Unique physical characteristics
Once the lines that marked our Denomination of Origin Almansa were definitively defined in 2013, the virtues and similarities in all the environmental conditions were also contrasted to ensure that there are no outstanding differences in the wine products obtained.
The vast majority of the vineyards are located on flat land, although it is also possible to find some vineyards on the slopes of hills and mountains.
The geographical positioning in the Peninsula assures us first of all a certain altitude with respect to the sea level, which is between 700 and 1100 meters (height that is reached in the area of Higueruela), which begins to set a topographic homogeneity for the production area.
Our Denomination of Origin Almansa has, as a whole, a production area with the ideal conditions, similar characteristics and originated by some environmental peculiarities, but always within a common identity that gives rise to have unique wines, high quality and known throughout the world.
